Lemon Garlic Hummus

By , January 14, 2010 9:41 am

How are you doing this fine day?

I’m doing pretty good!

Well… honestly… I’m struggling. Struggling with words to describe this hummus. This hummus is good. Really. Really. Good.

Ways I like to eat hummus:

  • With crackers (wheat thins, triscuits, pretzels, basically any cracker will do.)
  • With pita chips (of course)
  • In sandwiches
  • With flat bread
  • I dip olives in hummus… yes, you read that correctly…
  • In a quesadilla, with cheddar cheese and onions… its awesome. you should try it.
  • Sometimes after I make hummus I like to throw 1/2 cup or so of garbanzo beans for added crunch and texture.
  • On occasion, I eat it with veggies to make me feel healthy :)

If you haven’t noticed by now, my husband and I are big hummus fans. Huge!

I like basic hummus… but my husband… he comes home with all sorts of flavors.

We’ve had green onion hummus, jalapeno, spicy, horseradish, eggplant, you name it , we’ve had it in our fridge.

Some of them weren’t bad, but the horseradish… gross!

I never use to be picky about my hummus until one day… one day I got a taste of the good stuff. My dear friend from Jordan had been telling me for weeks she would make me hummus. One day she was kind enough to bring me a batch. IT. WAS. DELICIOUS. The flavors were simple… and perfect.

The key ingredient…. LEMON. You will need one or two of these.

You’ll need a 16 oz can of garbanzo beans, rinsed and drained.

1/4 cup olive oil

A couple cloves of garlic

And tahini

Plus some water and kosher salt.

This hummus is simple, incredible, creamy, and delicious!

  • 1 – 16 oz can garbanzo beans drained and rinsed
  • Juice of one large lemon or more depending on your taste
  • Two cloves garlic (crushed)
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1/4 cup tahini
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 cup or more of water

Throw all ingredients except the water in a food processor or blender. Blend until nice and smooth. Be sure to scrape down the sides. Slowly add the water in and continue to blend until creamy. I end up using about 1/2 of water to get the creamy consistency I like.

Place hummus in serving dish or air tight container, drizzle with a bit of olive oil on top. ENJOY!!

Question of the Day?

  2. i like basically the same recipe, but roast the garlic first! sooo good, and the roasting process brings out a little bit of sweetness too :) it’s also good with a little pico de gallo on top!

my husband recently discovered a love of flavorful hummus, so i WILL be making this for him soon!

  3. Alyson says:

I made my own hummus for the 1st time right after my fitness competition because I’d been craving it like crazy (what a funny, but fantastically healthy thing to crave). It was a Pumpkin Hummus and it turned out soooo good! My favorite way to eat it is with Kabocha Squash slices.. yummmm :)

  4. that hummus looks so good!! i love a big blob of hummus on a salad. yum!!

  5. I’m a huge hummus fan! Looks like a great classic recipe– thanks for sharing!

  6. isn’t it awful, I just can’t get into hummus!! My husband bought some, but I just couldn’t figure out a way to eat it that I liked :(

  7. Oh gosh I love hummus. I have made dill, cilantro, roasted red pepper, and spanish olive, but never lemon garlic, which are two of my favorite flavors actually! Can’t wait to give this a try, I put hummus on almost everything!

  8. Mommy RD says:

For some reason I don’t get the appeal of hummus. I like it alright, just don’t go out of my way for it. That said, I do enjoy it as a sandwich spread.

I usually make my own, as my husband loves it. I’m going to give your recipe a try.

  9. Oooh…that looks SO yummy!!!

  10. Pilar says:

My sweetie makes hummus all the time and I have never loved hummus so much as when he makes it. He likes to put fresh herbs in his (hello: basil! it’s incredible), but otherwise uses basically the same recipe as yours! yummmmmmie.

  12. you little tease. my mouth is now watering, thanks a lot! ;)

this looks fantastic and your photos are so stunning!

  13. I just had hummus, veggies and pita for lunch! Except my last batch was a little dry, yours looks great!…I always make my own – I can’t even eat store hummus anymore! My recipe is very similar to yours as well – lots of lemon is key! Love the top picture by the way!

  14. Lu says:

I love hummus. I remember the first time I had it. I happened upon it in my mom’s fridge and I tasted it. Homemade deliciousness. I ended up eating a serving of it all on its own. All of the flavors were so right. Now I ask for it as comfort food. And…I need a ton of comforting sometimes.

  15. Love lemony hummus. I should really try making my own.

How long does it last in the fridge?

My favorite way to eat hummus is in a “crack wrap”. Melt cheese in a whole weat pita and then spread on the hummus. So additing and delicious!

  16. Yep, I’m going to make this soon. I only wish I didn’t have IBS…as I don’t do well with beans. But, that’s the good thing about hummus, it’s not JUST beans, and it’s meant to be eaten in small amounts, which I can handle. Thanks for the recipe, my Magic Bullet will be put to work soon.
I like dipping fresh veggies in hummus, anything form carrots to cucumbers! I also like it with wraps. Yum.

  17. Hummus is the best. I love when there is a ton of olive oil and garlic mmmmm

  18. Kelly says:

Love this recipe! I have never made my own hummus before…I should start!

  19. I love hummus; especially with tons of garlic :)
My favorite way to eat it would be with crackers

  20. Nicole says:

SO saving that recipe! Thank you! It looks wonderful! I love to eat hummus on raw carrots best!

  21. That look so good! I tried making hummus without a recipe once and it was a disaster – I’m def going to try your recipe! I like hummus with carrots and pita chips!

  22. I seem to eat hummus with everything these days, that looks so good! I really need to try to make some of my own instead of buying it pre-made. :)

  23. Lucky for me I have everything in the house to make your recipe sans the pita but I just like to eat hummus with a spoon so I’m good to go! Thanks!

  24. haha that’s awesome! Funny but that’s actually my recipe for homemade hummus already! I don’t really use tahini but I’ve been thinking about it lately since my grocery store finally started carrying it.

  25. I love lemon and garlic in my hummus! That is the way I make it too!

  26. New reader here!
I always buy store bought hummus but now that I have a new fancy food processor I’m eager to make some from scratch! i’m going to use your recipe very soon!
