Overnight Oats for Kids

Sometimes I wonder what goes on in a child’s mind.

What makes them do the things they do?

Where does that wild imagination come from?

For example:

  • What made M grab a flower barrette from my closet and ask for me to put it in her hair?
  • What made her think to grab a very old Hello Kitty watch (from Avon, which should tell you how old it is) from my closet floor and ask me to put on her wrist?
  • What made her walk into the the downstairs bedroom, grab a bag from that closet and walk around the house pretending it’s a purse?

And just so you know… it was eight in the morning when all this was going on.

I blame all this energy on the stellar breakfast she had that morning. She had overnight oats for the first time. Her response after the first bite “YUH-MEEEEE!!”

M’s the kind of kid that wakes up starving every morning, to the point where I have to give her a little snack to tide her over while I get her breakfast ready. Overnight oats were perfect for her. She woke up, we brushed her teeth, came downstairs, and breakfast was all ready 🙂 It was a win win for both of us!

Here’s what went into M’s mix:

  • 1/2 cup greek yogurt
  • 1/4 oats
  • 2 tablespoons chopped dates (you can use raisins, or any dried fruit your kid likes)
  • 1/2 tsp honey
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk

Mix all ingredients together, store in an airtight container and let the oats set in the fridge overnight. The oats will become nice and soft and all those delicious flavors will blend together.

Pull the oats out the next morning. If its too thick for you, stir in a little milk until you get the consistency you or your kid likes. Top with fresh fruit, a drizzle of honey, and dig in 🙂

I can’t believe I waited so long to make this for her! This will be a part of her regular breakfast rotation 🙂

The thought of cold oatmeal does not appeal to me at all, but I wonder if Meghan would like this. I love it when breakfast is all ready in the morning!
