Garlicky Brown Rice & Mom Hair

IMG_3713

So I’m sitting here in my living room listening to my baby talk herself into a nap… which I know will eventually turn into an all out cry…

I’m just waiting…

While I’m waiting, I want to share this awesome garlic brown rice with you that I made the other night.

But… before I do that, I wanted to talk about something…

Mom Hair…

There was a segment on the Today Show about mom hair and the pressure for mom’s to fit into the MILF category.

For the few of you who don’t know what MILF stands for… you can get the wikipedia definition here. Or just go watch the original version of American Pie.

The biggest thing that caught my attention was that short hair was labeled as mom hair, and longer more luxurious hair was put in the MILF category.

There was something mentioned about the need to make things as easy as possible, hence… chopping off all one’s hair off.

Here’s the issue I have with that…

I have short hair! I’ve had short hair for the past eleven years.

And I don’t think I have mom hair.

Also… I think the “mom” look has something to do with the whole package…. If I was sporting mom jeans and crocheted sweater vests, then yes… I would have mom hair regardless of the length…

IMG_3718

Here’s the deal…. I have a short “edgy” bob (according to Odie, my hair stylist) that falls just above my chin.

And I “think” I dress pretty cool… the keyword here is “think”

So… in defense of my short hair… here are a couple of reasons I came up with on why short hair should NOT be considered mom hair:

  • Always maintain your hair in a style that complements your face. I have a round slightly heart shaped face and a small frame. I’ve gone the long hair route, and shorter hair just looks better on me πŸ™‚

  • Don’t always go with the super trendy fashions at the time. Wear what looks good on you above all. Not everyone can wear every fashion that comes around. I like to stick with classic pieces and spend less money on trendy stuff…

So, to me… I don’t have mom hair. I “try” to keep it edgy and stylish. On a good day I’ve accomplished that goal and feel a little better about my daily mom appearance when I like my hair. πŸ™‚

Okay… now time for this super easy rice!

IMG_3700

This rice was so easy to make and super tasty! The key is the garlic… I use four cloves!

Here’s the recipe…

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups uncooked brown rice
  • 3-4 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 4 cups low sodium chicken broth
  • salt and pepper to taste

In a large sauce pan, bring the olive oil to a medium heat.

Pour the uncooked rice in the pan and gently toss in the hot oil for a few minutes. You don’t want to burn the rice, but just toast is a little.

Next put the garlic in and toss for a couple minutes.

Pour the chicken broth into the pan and bring to a boil. Bring rice to a simmer. Cover the pan and let cook for about 20-25 minutes until rice is nice a fluffy.

Add salt and pepper to taste.

And that’s it! That’s all it takes to make this awesome side dish! I like to serve it with lemon garlic shrimp on top!

Question of the Day:

So what’s your definition of mom hair? And do you have to be a “mom” to fall into that category?

Hahahah I think growing up I always thought short hair was also ‘mom hair!’ My mom has always had shorter hair. I don’t think that anymore, though – there are some really cute short trends now. One thing I think is gross: long, GRAY hair. Yuck.

i’d say mom hair definitely depends on the wardrobe and just the general appearance of a person! i mean, nothing’s wrong with short hair AT ALL. the thing that makes it mom-like is if it’s done to keep the kid from pulling on it πŸ™‚ i had short hair for a LONG time because I thought it’d be easier to style, but it requires a lot more upkeep for me, so i’ve just let it grow. at least i can pull it back in a nice-looking way when it’s long (my hair is super curly)

also, i need some of that rice now. what a simple and delicious recipe!

I watched that segment and realized that I have “mom hair”, but I’m not a mom. I guess I’m just pathetic according to their standards.

I have mom hair too then! But I’m 25 with no children!

I’m not going to lie, being a MILF just means that your daughters guy friends in high school would like to sleep with you.. is that really what people want?! 16 year old gwarfy kids chasing after them? Not for me!

Oh, Today Show, ever at a loss for good stories. So Halle Berry has mom hair? Really? Because I think most people would say she’s a MILF. I think the Today Show just has nothing better to talk about during that second hour. I’d also like to wonder aloud whether the Octomom is a MILF simply because she has long hair. Didn’t think so.

When I think of “mom hair” or “mom jeans” etc. I think of unfashionable! But certainly all moms these days are not untrendy. I have short hair myself and I love it! And I am not a mom :).

I’ve had super short hair since I was 18 … I didn’t become a mom until I was 43 … at what point did my hair become “mom” hair? LOL I knew there were many reasons why I don’t watch those idiotic shows … with so many great things to talk about they chose something like this ??? pathetic …

I feel the same way about my short hair. It is a stylish look, and I’m a mom. I’d like to think that I dress fashionable enough to pass muster. However, I think it’s all in the vibe you give off. OMG! Rice heaven. My son would love that.

I agree! I think it is so dumb that there are “rules” for lengths at certain ages, etc. I think you should go with what you like and what looks good on you!
Oh and that rice sounds fantastic! πŸ™‚

I’m waaaay to hungry to be staring at the rice pic. As for mom hair, I chopped off 4 inches a few months back. I am sexy-ier now. I have that extra essence of MILF goin’ on.

    It depends on the cut.

Look at Victoria Beckham, MILF with short hair!

Look at Halle Berry, MILF with short hair!

  12. Nicole @ Making Good Choices said on April 20, 2010 at 4:23 pm

haha I loved this post! I agree, not all short hair is mom hair! I’m sure you have a great cut and I agree it really is about the whole package, not just the hair! haha

Ugh…I hate that crap! Seriously, don’t watch the Today show when that stuff comes on. How horrible is it for them to throw everybody in that category??? I have had hair chopped to my chin before and I LOVED it. I think the “mom” look depends on the person and honestly…the whole package! You certainly do not have a “mom” look!

As for the hair dresser…love the name Odie…I would trust anybody with that name cutting my hair!

I giggled reading this and your defense! You have nothing to worry about, a sassy bob is the farthest thing from a MOM cut! I think anyways, because it’s what I’ve been wearing for the past year!!!! πŸ™‚ And I’m sure you dress adorable, too!

    The rice sounds really good!

P.S. Yes, taking the CDE exam ASAP! I need 500 more hours, but I’m accumulating them VERY quickly!

I do think that moms (new moms) tend to chop off their hair b/c they are stressed. For me, i love my hair long and think i will be in a nursing home with longer hair. As you had short hair long before you became a mom. I think if you feel confident w/ short hair, then work it. I don’t. I like my longer hair πŸ™‚
Milf. I can’t believe someone wouldnt know what that is, but cute that you linked it πŸ™‚

I doubt your hair qualifies as “mom” hair! It sounds cute!

Mmmm, can’t wait to try this brown rice recipe!

I remember the day my mom made the transition to “mom” hair– I was so sad to see her long hair go!!

  18. Jess (Fit Chick in the City) said on April 21, 2010 at 9:26 am

Ha ha! My sister and I use to worry about having mom hair. In fact last year I got a terrible haircut that I deemed “mom hair”. I agree with everyone else, I doubt you have mom hair.

  19. lynn @ the actors diet said on April 21, 2010 at 7:56 pm

ha – i have never heard of “mom hair” before. hilarious.

You rock your short hair Estela! I would love to have a short cut but my hair just frizzes out without length. I am jealous of your total not-mom-hair!

  21. Mo@MommyRD said on April 21, 2010 at 10:04 pm

Ha, I think mom hair is what I’ve been sporting lately; a pony tail because I’m to lazy to blow dry and style my hair.

  22. Patty said on April 22, 2010 at 1:24 pm

Holy smokes, that is a hilarious post! I am a mother of 2 and have heard of this mom-hair business. I happen to have long hair, but am seriously considering something significantly shorter. The only hesitancy is because I’m not sure I could pull of shorter hair (my hair is super thick & wavy…could look a bit like a fro). In any case, I totally agree with you…it’s about the entire package. P.S. thanks for the delicious rice recipe and congrats to you/your baby for reaching the major crawling milestone! In a few months, when she is running around like crazy, you are going to wish she was back to her pre-walking days!

I laughed when I read your ‘definition of mom hair’ πŸ™‚ I am 25 (not yet a mom) and also have a round face/small frame..and have been wondering if I should cut my hair for the past year, (its past my shoulders now)… But I have always assumed I would just wait to ‘cut it off’ when I become a mom one day! πŸ˜‰
