When A Toddler Picks Out Their Own Meal

Yesterday was one of those days when I just didn’t have it all together. We all have days like that right? By the time dinner rolled around I realized I had nothing planned for my family and hadn’t been to the grocery store in a week. I quickly examined the contents of the refrigerator and freezer. We had frozen turkey, tortillas, frozen peas, and a random assortment of fruits and veggies on their last leg. I had just enough seasoning to make taco mix… so turkey tacos it was! I cooked the taco meat, beans, and tortillas in 10 minutes and everyone else had to fend for themselves. When I asked M was she wanted on her taco she declared she didn’t want a taco. She wanted the taco meat and beans separate, the tortilla cold (not warmed) on the side, peas, kiwi, tomato, cheerios, and a banana. She put the plate together herself. This was a strange not to mention odd assortment of food, but I let her do her thing and to my surprise she chose a pretty balanced meal and ate just about everything. Given her odd choice of food combo’s (I mean who doesn’t like a side of cheerios with their taco meat?) I was proud of my little girl. I’m sure she will have her share of disastrous unbalanced food combos in the future, so I am going the enjoy these little “wins” when I can get them.

I love having the kids come up with their meals. It’s interesting to see how they put things together and what they choose. It’s so rewarding to see their instinct goes with balanced meals! Great job M!

Way to go, M! That’s quite the feast she’s got there. She’s obviously learned from the best 🙂

    Way to #wintheday, you two!

  4. Looks like she did a pretty good job! Fiber-licous fruits and veggies for the win!
